//CONCEPT FOR A NEW ART SCHOOL UNION
My concept for the new art school union is inspired by the meaning of the Horizon. The Horizon is an imaginary line that is perceived individually. It is also something remote, stimulating our desire to discover and our curiosity. We can walk towards it, will never reach it though.
The space is simple and flexible, it features two bars and dancefloors, and several seating areas. The existing columns and beams are the center of the design. The different spaces are embraced around them and connected by a horizontal light strip that runs all around the space, representing the imaginative horizon line.
The dominant material is concrete in different appearances. Polished concrete on the floor allows daylight to bounce through the space and white concrete surfaces become light canvas in the evening.
When night falls, coloured light allows to change the appearance of the space completely. The beams and columns are lit gradually in yellow and orange, and the blue furniture glows in the dark. The color scheme is inspired by the sunset that we can observe ever so often from the DJCAD building.
My main inspirations for this the project are Ben Kelly’s “Factory 251” and Olafur Eliasson’s installation “Your Black Horizon”.
